5 Places to Travel to This Year

by Umeeka

With so many travel plans canceled last year, many people are ready to take advantage of open borders. So much of the world is within reach again, and it’s time to take advantage of travel opportunities and make up for the lost time. If you haven’t decided where you want to travel this year, consider these five amazing countries.

1. Greece

Greece is on the bucket list of every serious wanderer. If you want to experience the heart of knowledge and the home of ancient ruins, Greece is a must. You can explore the coast via any of the many Greek island cruises and spend your days standing at the base of Mount Olympus or marveling at the white and blue architecture of Santorini.

In Athens, visit the Acropolis, where the Parthenon still stands, or go to the Panathenaic stadium, where athletes competed in the first Olympic Games. In Mycenae, you can see the ancient royal palace that once housed Agamemnon, the famous Trojan War hero. Each city is full of history and adventure; you’ll never run out of places to see.

2. Japan

When you think of visiting Japan, you probably imagine cherry blossoms, fascinating technology, delicious sushi and high fashion. You can experience all of those things in Tokyo alone. Pop culture, shopping and entertainment around every corner make Tokyo a city of diversity and excitement.

There’s even more to Japan that a dedicated traveler must explore. You can climb the sacred volcano of Mt Fuji, a place of traditional pilgrimages and stunning scenery. Find the spirit and history of Hiroshima reflected in the Peace Memorial Museum and its surrounding park. Last, take in the tropical vibes of Okinawa and the Southwest Islands where you’ll feel the difference in culture.

3. New Zealand

For nature lovers, New Zealand is rich in natural beauty and exciting outdoor adventures. You’ll visit the Bay of Islands and try scuba diving or take in marine life on a local cruise. See the eighth wonder of the world, Milford Sound, where glaciers of the Ice Age formed a landscape of waterfalls, cliffs and mountains.

If you’re looking for history and culture, spend a few days in Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city. Take in the art scene at the Auckland Art Gallery, or take a walk through the Auckland Domain, a breathtaking park where you can get fresh produce at the farmers’ market. Adventure seekers can go bungee jumping or bridge climbing. There’s something for everyone.

4. Norway

You may have never considered Norway as a travel destination, but don’t underestimate what this incredible country has to offer. When you land in Oslo, take the time to see the city. It’s surrounded by a gorgeous mountain range and is overflowing with fun activities. The Viking Ship Museum is perfect for history buffs. Art lovers will enjoy the National Gallery and the cutting-edge architecture.

Once you venture outside of Oslo, explore the Fjords of Norway and adventure into the mountains via cruise. Wander around Bergen, a picturesque town in the hills rich with medieval history. If you’re interested in spectacular sites, be sure to visit Lysefjord and Pulpit Rock, one of the greatest natural features in Scandinavia.

5. Italy

Last, but certainly not least, is Italy. Enjoy the food, the history and the romantic atmosphere of the world’s most beloved peninsula. Italy is inarguably a special place with a long list of must-see cities and the opportunity to have a glass of wine at every meal.

You can start in Rome and see the Colosseum, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican. Travel the canals of Venice in a gondola with your significant other. Take in the sites of the Amalfi Coast and stay cliff-side where the views are unmatched. Of course, you’ll have access to the best pasta and pizza in the world along the way.

As the availability to travel opens up, more and more people are starting to plan. Wherever you choose to go, you’ll be surrounded again by life and excitement. Take a chance and visit somewhere new.
