Following and obeying the principles for effective performance in any field is very essential. In the field of education, principles of teaching refer to the governing guides and practices that make teaching and learning better and productive for both learners and educators.

5 main teaching principles: teachers must follow.

” Teachers are educational doctors. We access, we run tests, we diagnose, we prescribe.” – Mellisa Townsend.

An effective teacher tries his or her best to follow the maxims of teaching to enhance their teaching quality and education process.  Let us discuss the main teaching principles one by one.

  1. Connecting knowledge.

Connecting the prior knowledge to the new teachings and knowledge is one of the most important principles that teachers should follow. Try your best to relate the existing and new information for effective delivery of education to the students.

” From Known to unknown ” is one of the famous maxims of teaching. This means connecting and developing a relationship between known and unknown or old and the latest knowledge. For example, if you are a science teacher and want to explain the topic of reproduction in living organisms so first, we can link it with what they have learned in their previous classes, such as simple definitions of reproduction, its types, etc and later you can teach them the complex process of reproduction in animals and humans. This helps students to relate and understand better.

  1. Lesson practicing and rehearsal.

” Through practice, gently and gradually, we can collect ourselves and learn how to be more fully with what we do. ” – Jack Kornfield.

Other than only teaching and reciting the lessons to the students, practice, and rehearsal of the knowledge are equally important. It comes under the category of important roles of teachers for an effective process of education. Practicing whatever we are teaching students is also very important as we have listened to that practice always makes the man perfect.

Revision should be done in such a way that students are getting proper clarity of the topics, deepening their understanding of the syllabus, and practicing effectively for the examinations of the particular course. For this, teachers can do the following:

  • Introduce the habit of self-study in the learners. Learning oneself alone is the best way to grab more knowledge and hold command and a good understanding of a subject or topic. This will increase their proficiency in learning. In self-study, you will be able to follow your comfortable method of learning at your own pace. There is no fear of competition here.
  • Group revisions and group discussions are also very helpful for effective revision and practice. Students will interact more this way and there will be a better exchange of information and ideas.
  1. Conducting tests of learning

Conducting tests and checking the understanding level of delivered knowledge is the main principle of teaching or you can say one of the most important roles of teachers to perform for fulfilling the responsibilities and duties of their teaching profession. Conducting tests is helpful in many ways. Other than midterms and final examinations of a course, regular tests such as every week. Every week tests are known as weekly tests. This will help students in learning and focusing on their course constantly.  Teachers also take surprise tests from the students which are quite beneficial.

  • It enhances the preparation of academic subjects. When teachers conduct exams and papers regularly, this boosts the preparation skills of the learners. This is the reason why conducting exams is an important teaching principle.
  • Memorizing the skills, thinking abilities, and hard-working capacity of the students is also increased. Regular involvement with studies improves the learning quality of the students.
  1. Frequent and continual questioning

Frequent and continual questioning in the classrooms by the teachers is very beneficial. When a teacher asks questions constantly that makes students focus and concentrate better in the classroom as well as on their studies. This will help teachers to identify and track whether everybody is practicing active listening or not. The main aim and principle for the teachers should be to create an interactive and effective classroom where students participate quite actively. Call out the names of the students individually. This activity is very interesting and helpful for better class engagement and student participation. Teachers should practice continuous questioning in their classrooms.

  1. Delivery of feedback

The main principle that an effective teacher should follow is proper and consistent delivery of feedback to the students. After tracking the performance of the learners, do give them feedback. When students receive feedback it gives them scope for improvisation and betterment in the academic subjects. Their performance and scores are also improved to a great extent. Constructive comments and feedback are always beneficial for the learners. Teachers should surely include this in their teaching methods.

The above-mentioned teaching principles should be followed by all the teachers to deliver effective knowledge to their learners. By following these principles and standards, a teacher will be able to perform the responsibility and duties of the teaching profession efficiently. This way imparting and receiving effective knowledge is achieved by the teachers and students respectively.
